Vanessa Stephens-Moschiano, EMT - Birth Assistant

Vanessa first learned of midwifery when she was six years old. At her piano lesson, when a cat

suddenly went into labor, a family friend who happened to be a midwife calmly explained each

stage of the birth as it unfolded. Vanessa was mesmerized. That day is not only her earliest

memory but also the moment she knew she wanted to be a midwife.

What seemed like a small, random event left a lasting mark. It sparked in Vanessa a deep

respect, curiosity, and appreciation for birth. At sixteen and fresh out of doula training, she

attended her first human birth, and a year later, the same midwife from that unforgettable cat

day welcomed Vanessa into her first midwifery apprenticeship.

Since beginning her path to become a Certified Professional Midwife in 2018, Vanessa has

been honored to attend over 500 births. She believes deeply in the holistic, evidence-based

approach that midwifery offers, and is committed to ensuring every birthing person feels safe,

heard, and respected. She is also an Emergency Medical Technician, and finds fulfillment in the

wide scope of care both roles provide.

Nowadays, Vanessa still feels the same wonder she did as a six-year-old watching new life

come into the world for the first time. She remains completely in awe of birth, and profoundly

honored each time she is invited into such a sacred space.

Outside of birth work, Vanessa is in her final year of pre-medical school and is enjoying studying

Biomedical Science. She spends her free time with her fiancé, Deven, and their Rottweiler

Mara. Her favorite hobbies include working out, cooking, and kayaking.
