Student Experiences

BRBC is proud to provide educational opportunities for midwifery students for both clinic appointments and during labor and birth. We accept one student at a time. Students must commit to a minimum of 6 months for clinical placement - clinicals at BRBC can be in conjunction with other facility clinical sites if indicated.

In an effort to address Black maternal morbidity rates nationally, BRBC prioritizes clinical placement of eligible BIPOC midwifery students in hopes to increase access to Black Midwives in the United States.

Learning opportunities include:

  • Holistic prenatal midwifery care

  • Supporting physiological birth in a community setting

  • Postpartum dyad care of parent and newborn 

  • Well body exams 

  • Contraception management (including IUD placements & removals) 

  • Stabilization of non-urgent, urgent and emergent complications in community setting 

Student Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a Certified Nurse Midwife ACME Accredited Program 

  • Active Illinois RN license by start of anticipated clinical rotation

  • Current NRP/CRP Certification

  • Strong interest in community birth setting midwifery 

  • Minimum 6 month commitment 

Preferred 

  • At least 1 year of labor & delivery experience in hospital, birth center or home birth

OR

  • Prior or co-current student midwifery clinical experience in a hospital setting  

Applications are reviewed monthly by the midwife team and student interviews are scheduled prior to selection.
